Current and future concepts of valve diagnostics

Presented by: Christopher Hohmann, product manager at SAMSON

In the process industry, specific diagnostic software tools are used to detect faults in plant components at an early stage, to minimize the consequences of such malfunctions and to prevent unscheduled plant downtime. The use of device-specific diagnostic tools has been common practice in modern process plants for some time as they help make industrial processes safer, more efficient and better plannable. This also includes valve diagnostics, which detect and analyze the condition of control valves. Valve diagnostics require a broad basis of data – usually provided by digital positioners. But these positioner data alone are not enough to make reliable statements on the valve condition. It takes detailed analyses for this purpose. The analyses are supported by manufacturer-independent test functions that provide in-depth information on the operational reliability of the control valve. Newer approaches combine integrated diagnostic concepts with web-based asset management systems. As a general rule, the quality of diagnostics increases the smarter and better networked the individual components are. The smart, networked control valve is key to implementing the ideas of Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in the process industry. The same is true for modern solutions based on simulations or machine learning.
